Nacido el 22 de Agosto de 1917 en Clarksdale fue uno de los mas influyentes cantantes del Delta del Missisipi. Su carrera empezó en 1948 cuando consiguió el éxito con el single "Boogie Chillum". Con un ritmo muy marcado y un estilo de guitarra sencillo y duro (I'm in the mood, 1951; Boom boom, 1962). Ha ejercido una gran influencia sobre los grupos de rock de los años cincuenta y sesenta.
